This article will show you how to enable EDGE for free on your Motorola A1200 Ming. To do so, you will first need to download RadioComm and install it. You will also need the script Edge.tcs (download and extract it anywhere).

What is EDGE?

EDGE, short for Enhanced Data GSM Environment, is a faster version the GSM wireless service designed to deliver data at rates up to 3 times faster (at 384 Kbps) and enable the delivery of multimedia and other broadband applications to mobile devices. EDGE upon the GSM standard, using the same frame structure and existing cell arrangements.

Enabling EDGE on Motorola A1200

In order to turn on Edge you need to follow the below instructions.

Part 1. Getting RadioComm to recognize your Motorola A1200:

Start RadioComm. It will display a settings window. Enter MA = GSM and Settings = M-Link USB driver

You should now see the main RadioComm panel. It should have a red “Radio Detection” button on the top right and you should see a Red square down in the taskbar icons area. When these turn green this indicates that the progam has detected the phone (radio) correctly.

Close RadioComm.

Turn on your phone and go to Setup, USB mode and select Modem.

Connect your A1200 to PC via a USB cable and start RadioComm again.

Change the connection mode to USB if the software asks for it.

When your phone is detected for the first time, a prompt may appear asking to install drivers. Select Yes and install the drivers. This will repeat around 20, there is nothing wrong.

You might have to reboot the system after all drivers are installed and restart RadioComm.

When it has detected the phone correctly, the Radio Detection button on the right turns green.

.

Part 2. Enable EDGE on your Motorola A1200

To the far right you will see several buttons, click the one labeled as Setup Button.

A window will pop-up, press the Browse button and select the Edge.tcs file downloaded earlier.

Label it something like Enable EDGE it’s only for your own reference, and click the button label SET.

When done, close that window. You should now have a new button labeled the way you named it in the previous step.

Click on the button to run the script. A series of log results should be displayed in the big white window. The last one should say Complete.

Exit RadioComm, unplug the phone and restart it.

Assuming EDGE is available from your provider and you have completed every step listed above, you should see an E instead of a G on the status bar. If you still see a G, it means that EDGE is not available.

Motorola A1200 EDGE Key

Green E: Connected and receiving data.
Underlined E: Connected to an EDGE network.
Regular E EDGE available.
Red Circle: No radio detected.

Blue Circle: Radio detected and in Motorola USB Modem mode.
Green Circle: Radio detected and in USB Composite Device mode.
Yellow Circle: Radio enumerated as a USB LAN device, the socket connection not yet successful.
Pink Circle: Radio enumerated as a USB LAN device, socket connection successful.

The Motorola Driver Installer was developed to ease the installation process of the Motorola A1200 drivers on Windows PCs. This installer is designed to pre-install the INFs and drivers on the target machine to let the devices connect over USB.

The installer is also designed to clean the machine of all Motorola USB devices that were connected and installed on the system. This is accomplished by searching the registry and removing the device instances as well as parsing through the INF directory looking for any INFs that have the Motorola MDB USB Vendor ID in the INFs. If this is found in the directory the INF and the PNF file that was created is deleted.

There are basically three types of cases for the Motorola A1200 Ming phone; the silicone case, the crystal case and the leather case. Each solution have their pros and cons and are suitable for different people. Let’s have a breakdown on what case suits you the best. If you are interested in any of these cases, you will find links at the bottom for these products for a good price on eBay.

Silicone Case: The silicone case is soft and wraps around your A1200 protecting it. However, it does not wrap around the entire phone, leaving the front exposed to damage. Silicone cases come in many different colors to suit any taste.

Crystal Case: The crystal cases are made of hard transparent plastic and can cover most of the phone. This case adds quite some bulk to the phone and also hinder the access to some buttons.

Leather Case: The leather case for Motorola A1200 covers the entire phone, and can be attached to a belt. It is usually in black and offers a whole new style and way of use compared to the previous two solutions.

These Motorola A1200 cases can be bought the cheapest on the auction site eBay. Below are links for Motorola A1200 cases from there.
